DE-LIGHT-FULL ADDITION
This charming turn of the century home, purchased in the 1990’s by the current owners, has been loved and cared for with small remodels and updates in keeping with the original design. As the family’s children grew, so did the need for more living space. Two children sharing a bedroom each needed their own space, and one more bedroom was needed. Our clients had hoped for a two story addition with a sunroom below and ensuite above. However, because this compromised an egress window for one of the existing bedrooms, the owners re-evaluated and drew the conclusion that the single-story addition would achieve their goals and desired scope. Flexibility is often part of the design process. For this remodel, the constraints led to a great solution.
The challenge on this project was blending the ground floor addition in a way that was scaled appropriately and in keeping with the style of the home. Salvaged wood and reused and preserved windows were incorporated into the design.
The property had ample room for the addition of a primary bedroom, bathroom and windowed corridor that connects to the main living areas. A cushioned window seat and destination hanging chair in this light filled space are perfect for reading and relaxing and provides the desired effect of a sunroom. This family loves to read and that passion is further reflected in the bedroom’s custom headboard with plenty of shelving for books. Double glass French doors lead to the patio and beautifully mature backyard gardens.
Additionally, the kitchen was remodeled to include a combination of built-ins and open shelving. There is a new, larger opening to the dining area – including bar seating. To gain extra storage space, the design incorporated a sweet conversion of a closet to a coffee bar. The family now has the space it needs.
